Forensic botany lies at the crossroads between plant science and forensics. Plants and their parts are useful crime evidence because plant cell walls, spores, and pollens are distinctive enough to be recognizable and are composed of strong compounds that are resistant to destruction over prolonged periods of time. The botanical aspect of forensic botany primarily focuses on the anatomy and taxonomy of plants that experts use to identify particular species, whereas the forensic aspect deals with recognizing plant-based evidence at a crime scene, and knowing how to collect and process it properly so it will be admissible in a court of law.
