A confluence of technological improvements are creating a massive shift from large, expensive geostationary (GEO) satellites, whose position remains fixed relative to the earth's rotation, to constellations of much smaller weight satellites in lower orbits. The GEO satellites that have traditionally been the workhorses of telecommunications, be it for military, video, scientific, environmental or other uses orbit at 22,300 miles above a point on the earth's surface, and rotate at the same velocity of the earth, thereby maintaining their position. Historically, great size (akin to a school bus) and weight (15,000 pounds) was required to house the electronics, antennas and solar arrays needed for them to do their job. However, in the past five years a number of technological forces are shifting the balance to lighter, low earth orbit (LEO) satellites about the size and weight (2,000 pounds) of a sports car.
