The trucks, as many as 6-10 per day, will move the ore on highways across the northern part of the Navajo Nation. Opponents of the plan say Navajo leaders shouldn't have backed down from its position not to allow uranium shipments on the Navajo Reservation. With an agreement in place between the Navajo Nation and Energy Fuels Inc. shipments of uranium from the Pinyon Plain Mine to a mill in Utah could begin as soon as next Wednesday. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed an executive order six months ago requiring a firm agreement before the mining company transported uranium ore across Navajo lands. At the time, Energy Fuels Inc. had voluntarily halted shipments at the request of Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs. At least six to 10 trucks will haul uranium ore daily from the mine, located south of the Grand Canyon, to the mill in southeastern Utah.
