Government cuts could cost Michigan universities more than $200M in research spending [USA TODAY]

Much of that spending is done in Michigan, providing an economic boost to the state. "Whether by purchasing equipment, hiring contractors or training early career researchers, universities are a source of everyday economic and social benefits to communities in every congressional district in the country," said Jason Owen-Smith, a sociology professor at the University of Michigan who also serves as vice president for research-institutional capabilities. Owen-Smith runs the (IRIS), a consortium of 32 research universities that's housed at the U-M. The institute was started in 2015 to collect data on research spending to help schools document the economic impact of their work. That data is important as some of that spending could be at risk because of proposed cuts to the way the government reimburses universities for research-related overhead. That's things like debt, maintenance and utilities on lab buildings, lab equipment, as well as some administrative costs like accounting.
