It isn’t easy for a company to celebrate when a global pandemic is forcing it to furlough thousands of workers and the world is awash in pessimism about future economic performance. So chances are, nobody broke out the champagne last month at Textron Tower in downtown Providence, Rhode Island when two potentially game-changing announcements were made by the U.S. Army.In normal times, though, it would have been hard not to cheer. On March 16, the Army confirmed that Textron Bell, the company’s rotorcraft unit, would be one of two competitors in what will likely become the biggest such program in the world—the program to replace thousands of Black Hawk utility helicopters.Only nine days later, Textron Bell beat several other industry teams to be selected as one of two candidates to build a successor to the Army’s Kiowa scout helicopter.
