On good days, I like to see whether I can get the discounts, combined with raiding the reduced section, to knock off more than half of the upfront cost. Treating it like a game makes the chore of shopping a little less dull. But a recent trend has been bothering me. Increasingly, older shoppers have been asking me to tap my loyalty card for them, so that they can benefit from the same discounts that I get without all the fuss of setting up an account. Loyalty schemes used to be added extras, a voucher here and there – a reward for frequent flyers. But in recent years, they have morphed into something altogether more sinister. Although positioned as discounts, in reality, loyalty cards just stop you paying far over the odds. Why should pensioners have to hang around like teenagers looking for someone to buy them booze and cigarettes, begging for the pity of someone with a smartphone? Will we get to a point where charities are advising them, as they do small children, to look for
