The average Christmas dinner will cost £32.57 this year, an increase of 6.5pc or £2, compared with a year ago, according to grocery data experts Kantar. Wetter weather and flooding in Britain have hit harvests of Christmas dinner staples such as in carrots in recent weeks, leaving many farmers with destroyed crops Based on an average meal for four people, the cost of parsnips has jumped by 12.7pc to 71p, while carrots have risen by 11.4pc to 49p. Potatoes have surged by 16.2pc to £1.65, while cauliflower was up by 14.6pc to £1.18 and Brussels sprouts were 1.1pc costlier at 89p. The significant increase in costs means the price of a Christmas dinner rose at almost three times the rate of grocery inflation, which Kantar said stood at 2.6pc in the four weeks to Dec 1.
