Mince pie prices jump by 40pc in Christmas shopping blow [Yahoo! Finance]

The prices for some of Tesco's premium mince pie packs – including its salted caramel crumble topped pies – have jumped by £1 to £3.50, or 40pc. Other supermarkets have also been pushing up prices, with increases first reported by trade publication the Grocer. Costs for packs of mince pies have risen by between 9pc and 20pc across other supermarkets. Figures compiled by Assosia for The Telegraph show that, overall, across Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons, prices for mince pies are up by an average of 26pc over the past two years. In the past year, a basic range of six own-brand mince pies has risen by 11p, or 8pc, across those four supermarkets. The rise in the price of mince pies follows months of soaring sultana costs. It comes after two years of bad harvests in Turkey, the largest producer of sultanas.
