Shoppers deserted Asda in February, delivering a further blow to the ailing supermarket as it scrambles to reverse its fortunes. Sales at Asda dropped by 5pc in the four weeks to Feb 23 compared with the same period last year, according to Kantar, dragging its market share down to 12.6pc from 13.7pc. It was the only major grocer to suffer a decline, with every other supermarket chain managing to grow sales in February. Sales at Tesco, the largest player, grew by 5.8pc, while Sainsbury's, the second-largest, posted growth of 4.8pc. It follows a disastrous period for Asda, which reported its worst Christmas sales since 2015 at the end of last year. The company's woes have prompted the return of its former boss Allan Leighton , who is charged with delivering a revival.
