Photo courtesy of Toyota In one of Japan's most successful automotive partnerships ever, Toyota and Subaru teamed up back in 2012 to launch the Scion FR-S (called Toyota 86 in Japan and GT86 in other markets) and the Subaru BRZ coupes. Then they launched their respective second generation models in 2021 with better proportions and an significant engine upgrade. Now, in 2025, we can expect the same again, with sharper edges and a more powerful turbocharged hybrid. These two-door sports cars became instant hits with enthusiasts thanks to their sharp styling, rear-wheel-drive layouts and punchy 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer engines. The FR-S sold just shy of 80,000 units from 2012 to 2021, while its successor—the GR86—has so far sold around 23,000 making the two models one of the most sought-after coupes in the customizing market.
