Los fabricantes de automóviles y sus proveedores se instalaron hace tiempo en México y Canadá, aprovechando la zona de libre comercio con Estados Unidos (TLC). En 2024, los fabricantes estadounidenses y europeos exportaron unos tres millones de automóviles y vehículos utilitarios desde México, y 1,1 millones desde Canadá, según las cifras del Departamento de Comercio estadounidense. Las cadenas de producción están muy engranadas: las piezas a veces hacen varias idas y venidas a través de las fronteras antes de ser ensambladas en los automóviles, lo que complica las reorganizaciones ante los aranceles anunciados el miércoles por Donald Trump.
