And then is everything blue in stores really representative of the holiday? We know Hanukkah is the festival of lights, but why are they always all blue? Getty Images Happy December, everyone! By now, and honestly maybe since October, the shopping malls have been decked out with red and green decor and the grocery stores are playing carols on an endless loop over the loud speakers, to the chagrin of many an employee. However, there is usually one tiny section that stands out amongst the crimson and emerald as you stroll through the aisles—what is this blue doing here? Congratulations, you have found the Hanukkah section. Some years, since Hanukkah follows a lunar calendar and not a Gregorian one like Christmas, you may not even find this section during December and instead stumble upon it next to the stuffing and turkey when it falls in November, or by the streamers and glitter when some of the eight days overlap with New Year's Eve, like this year.
