Summary Pre-provision profits came in below expectations on higher spending, and management guided to even higher spending in 2020. Building up the bank's revenue generation capabilities to take advantage of dislocations in the market makes sense, but Synovus shares could really use some beat-and-raise quarters to improve sentiment. Synovus continues to trade at a meaningful discount to fair value, but ongoing misses on operating leverage are problematic. The line between “patient, long-term investor” and “wrong” can be fuzzy in the best of times and is sometimes only visible in hindsight.
