One of the world's biggest education funds, run by a Tencent co-founder, awarded the 2024 Yidan Prize on Thursday to a group helping children in conflict-hit countries like Lebanon and Ukraine. The Yidan Prize is a Hong Kong-based philanthropic foundation that seeks to recognise "innovative work" in education globally. Set up in 2016 by Chen Yidan -- a Chinese philanthropist who was a co-founder of internet giant Tencent -- winners receive a HK$30 million (US$3.8 million) prize, half of which can be used to "support them in scaling their work". It announced Thursday a team winner this year comes from War Child Alliance, a Netherlands-based group that has a programme reaching over 205,000 marginalised children in countries affected by conflict. The team consists of War Child Alliance's director of research and development Mark Jordans, Marwa Zahr -- who is the lead for the group's implementation -- and "Can't Wait to Learn" programme director Luke Stannard.
