Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747 – 1823), is arguably the most important and influential watchmaker in the history of horology, inventing many landmark innovations during a career as a watchmaker. He is most celebrated for inventing the tourbillon, which offsets gravity and increases time accuracy for pocket watches. This addition to the watch escapement is still used today for wristwatches, although it now serves a more aesthetic function. Sotheby's will honor Breguet with a dedicated auction celebrating the 250th anniversary of the foundation of his eponymous company in Paris in 1775. It will be held in November, as part of Sotheby's Luxury Sales in Geneva, alongside its bi-annual “Important Watches” live auction. The exact date hasn't been set. Sotheby's says more details about the sale will be revealed in late spring.
