When died in March 2023 at age 98, a crucial restructuring was underway at Tokyo-based , which he built into a retailing behemoth, best known for its global 7-Eleven convenience store chain. ss After shutting down a quarter of its 126 Ito-Yokado supermarkets in the past two years, the company completed the sale of its struggling department store unit Sogo & Seibu Co. in September to U.S.-based Fortress Investment Group. Subsequently it pressed ahead with acquisitions, buying the 7-Eleven chain in Australia for $1.1 billion and expanding its U.S. footprint with the $950 million purchase of over 200 Sunoco gas stations and convenience stores. These moves, aimed at focusing on its core strength, were demanded by San Francisco-based activist investor .
