New Milford, N.J.: A Quiet Community Tucked Into a Busy Area - The New York Times The northern New Jersey borough of New Milford prizes its quiet, low-profile ways. The family-oriented suburb is just eight miles from the George Washington Bridge, but it has no train tracks or major roads. Say “New Milford” and some might think of the Connecticut town of the same name, or of West Milford, a larger town farther out in New Jersey. The Garden State’s New Milford, which covers just over two square miles, even has a bit of agriculture. So when the local ShopRite announced that it was moving about a mile up the road into a much larger store to be built next to the borough’s high school, residents wrung their hands with concern. “We don’t have a lot of traffic,” said Emily Totaro, 44, founder of the New Milford Moms Facebook group. “If there’s a jam it’s because a road is blocked.” PA.
