But now that interest rates are declining, what can investors expect from here and how long will the shifting rate environment impact markets? The Federal Reserve opted to lower interest rates at its Sept. 17-18 meeting, decreasing the federal funds rate by 50 basis points , to 4.75 to 5.0 percent. With inflation clearly cooling, the nation's central bank decided now was an appropriate time to let the brakes off a bit. It's likely the first of a string of rate cuts, which should help buoy the U.S. economy. Investors look forward to lower rates Interest rates are one of the biggest tools the Fed has for influencing the economy. By lowering rates, the Fed can stimulate economic activity, making it cheaper to borrow. On the other hand, by raising interest rates the Fed can slow economic activity, making credit more expensive — which is a useful strategy to fight inflation.
