Most Read from Bloomberg Malhotra, a surprise pick, will take charge from Shaktikanta Das under whom the RBI kept borrowing costs unchanged for almost two years. While Malhotra's views on monetary policy are largely unknown, he recently urged revenue officials to prioritize economic growth, and the markets may read his appointment as dovish. The central bank is expected to reduce the repurchase rate as soon as February, with some analysts even predicting a cut earlier through an off-cycle meeting. That augurs well for sovereign rupee bonds which have handed dollar-based investors an 8% gain this year. Analysts also expect the rupee to weaken steadily amid a strong US dollar and weaker Asian currencies. The local currency weakened as much as 0.2% to a fresh low of 84.87 against a dollar on Tuesday, while yield on the 10-year government bond fell 3 basis points to 6.69%.
