Eight teams look to play into the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a First Four win, which has been held in Dayton since 2011. The former one-game play-in, which was held from 2001-10, was also held at UD Arena at the University of Dayton The eight teams in the First Four consist of the last four at-large bids and last four automatic qualifiers, as determined by the NCAA Tournament committee that ranks teams from 0-68 on Selection Sunday. First Four teams have also seen success in past seasons, with VCU (2011) and UCLA (2021) making runs to the Final Four after playing in the play-in. Fairleigh Dickinson, a First Four team in 2023, also became the second-ever 16 seed to down a 1 seed (Purdue), and the only First Four team to hold that distinction.
