England’s 2003 World Cup winning scrum-half Matt Dawson has outlined how universities can continue to provide high quality international sports stars. National team hopeful Alex Dombrandt was spotted while playing for Cardiff Metropolitan University to earn a professional deal with Harlequins, while the university route may take more precedence after RFU announced a funding cut for second-tier Championship clubs. Dawson believes the world class facilities available at many education institutions now mean that they are more likely to produce athletes capable of performing on the highest stage.
