Stocks started off the month of September and the holiday shortened week in a way that echoed the beginning of August. All the major indices suffered steep declines with the Nasdaq Composite faring the worst, down 3.25%. The S&P 500 fell 2% while the Russell 2000 dropped 3% and Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.5%. There were a few potential catalysts for Tuesday's action, including some weaker than expected economic data. The economic reports released on Tuesday are arguably not the most important data points for markets. Manufacturing PMI and ISM Manufacturing PMI aren't exactly top tier indicators. However, in the context of a week where monthly employment is due out on Friday and the last employment report spooked markets, there is a heightened level of sensitivity to even the most obscure reports.
