Spain fined the two carriers, along with Vueling, Norwegian Air and Volotea, and said it would also ban some of the practices – including additional fees for hand luggage and charging for reserved seats for young children and other dependents. Ryanair, which was hit with the biggest fine of almost €108m, pledged to appeal the “illegal” penalties issued over its baggage policies, which it said had been approved in multiple Spanish and EU court hearings. Spain's consumer rights ministry said the penalties had also been applied for not accepting cash when selling tickets at airports. EasyJet was fined €29m after the Spanish ministry said the airline had given misleading information and failed to provide price transparency “which hinders consumers' ability to compare offers” and make informed decisions. ‘Illicit profit' Ryanair was specifically fined for charging passengers a “disproportionate amount” for printing their boarding passes at terminals when they did not have them.
