Vadim (Alan) Kats, who had recently lost his young family's fortune, had infiltrated Mr. Missaghi's cavernous office. Wielding a gun, he forced Mr. Missaghi and his business partner, Samira Yousefi, into the building's lobby, then fired a shot into a black leather couch. “I swear to my mother's grave – I will pay you back!” Mr. Missaghi pleaded with Mr. Kats, according to a witness. “Just calm down. Please! Put that down.” After a stretch of silence, gunfire erupted again at the 25 Mallard Road office in north Toronto. Mr. Kats had shot and killed Mr. Missaghi and Ms. Yousefi, then turned the gun on himself in the marble-tiled room. Eighteen months earlier, Mr. Kats had sunk his family's money into an investment opportunity presented by Ms. Yousefi, only to see the money disappear.
