She is due to graduate in the spring from the Pierpont Community and Technical College Aviation Maintenance Technology Program. However, the $1,200 certification the Federal Aviation Administration requires before becoming an aircraft technician is a heavy lift financially on top of tuition and living expenses for Curry. "It's difficult because you have to work, and then you gotta' go home and take care of kids," said Curry, mother of two. "So it makes it easier knowing that, that's taken care of. You don't have to worry about saving money." Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney awarded Pierpont's Aviation Maintenance Program $15,000 toward scholarships during a check presentation ceremony on Monday. Curry was a recipient of those funds in the past, which helped pay toward the certifications she needs to enter the field.
