"The engine manufacturer's inability to meet timely maintenance obligations has impacted the operational capabilities of airBaltic's Airbus A220-300 fleet," the company said in a statement. The carrier, in which the Latvian state has a 97.7 percent capital stake, said Pratt & Whitney had informed it that engine shortages meant several of its A220-300 aircraft would remain grounded, forcing adjustments to its summer schedule. The issue is related to a rare condition in powdered metal used to manufacture some engine parts which has led to microscopic cracks in high-pressure turbine disks. Most destinations likely to be affected are in Britain but some include Mediterranean resorts.
