Next year, we could see rates ease. But it depends on how the economy evolves. Mortgage rates haven't moved much after jumping up last month, and it's unclear when they'll go back down. Why are rates so high? Blame the strong economy. Rates dropped to 5.74% in September, the lowest level in two years, according to Zillow data. But in October, stronger-than-expected labor market data pushed rates back up above 6%. So far this month, they've been hovering in the mid-to-high 6% range. Next year, we could see mortgage rates ease a bit as the Federal Reserve lowers the federal funds rate. But if economic data continues to come in strong, they may not fall as much as some forecasts initially expected.
