If the Fed doesn't cut rates in December, we could see mortgage rates tick up a bit. Traders have recently tempered their expectations that the Federal Reserve will lower the federal funds rate in December, though they still believe a cut is likely. A month ago, traders were pricing in an 86% chance of a cut. Now, it's closer to 60%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool Mortgage rates are expected to go down next year as the Fed continues lowering its benchmark rate. But recent data has shown that the economy is still remarkably strong, which could lead the Fed to lower rates more slowly. This could keep mortgage rates elevated for longer. There's still a lot of economic data that will be released before the Fed meets next month. Until we get a more updated picture of how the economy is trending, it's hard to say for certain what the Fed will do at its next meeting.
