If the Fed doesn't cut rates in December, we may see mortgage rates inch up. But they could fall next year. So far in November, mortgage rates haven't moved much. Average 30-year rates have generally been hovering in the mid-to-high 6% range after rising last month, according to Zillow data. Strong economic data has tempered investor expectations that the Federal Reserve will lower rates again in December. This has helped push mortgage rates higher. In a speech last week, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the current strength in the economy means that the central bank doesn't need to "hurry" to lower rates The Fed has already lowered the federal funds rate twice this year, first by 50 basis points in September and then by 25 basis points in November. It's still possible that the Fed will cut rates by another 25 basis points at its next meeting in December, but it depends on what the latest data looks like in the lead-up to that meeting.
