Rates are expected to ease next year as the Fed lowers its benchmark rate. But stubborn inflation could complicate that. Mortgage rates are down slightly this month, but where they go next depends on how the economy evolves in the coming months. As the Federal Reserve continues lowering the federal funds rate, mortgage rates are expected to go down next year. But recent economic data has remained strong, and inflation increased slightly in October. If inflation remains elevated, the Fed may decide to pause its rate cuts, which could push mortgage rates up a bit. Next week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release consumer price index data for November. The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's inflation nowcast estimates that this inflation gauge rose 2.70% year over year in November. This would be another uptick from the previous month.
