If incoming data shows that inflation accelerated last month, mortgage rates could rise further this week. Mortgage rates remain elevated as markets wait for the latest consumer price index data, which will be released on Wednesday. Rates rose in the run-up to last week's election in anticipation of a Donald Trump win. Many economists and investors believe that President-elect Trump's proposed policies will reignite inflation , which would keep interest rates higher for longer. Mortgage rates increased dramatically in 2022 as the Federal Reserve raised the federal funds rate to combat high inflation. Now, inflation is way down from when it peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, and the Fed has started lowering its benchmark rate. In September 2024, the CPI rose 2.4% year over year, a slight slowdown from the previous month. But the inflation nowcast from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland estimates that this measure rose 2.56% year over year in October. If this estimate is accurate,
