In the near term, mortgage rates might not drop much further. But they should go down in 2025. Mortgage rates are holding steady after dropping rapidly earlier this month. Where they go next depends on the economy. Mortgage rates fell ahead of last week's rate cut from the Federal Reserve amid concerns that the labor market could be weakening. Now that the Fed has cut the federal funds rate by 50 basis points and the labor market appears to be holding up , mortgage rates might not fall much further this year. But they may ease throughout 2025. Even with lower rates, many would-be homebuyers have been slow to re-enter the market. On Thursday, the National Association of Realtors reported that pending home sales inched up just 0.6% in August, and were down 3% year over year. But borrowers could save a lot getting a mortgage now compared to those who bought a home when rates were higher.
