Unless the economic outlook changes, mortgage rates may hold steady for the rest of 2024. After briefly dipping below 5.50% last week, mortgage rates are back up this week and are closer to where they were at the start of the month. But rates have been trending down for several months now, and borrowers could still get a good deal on a mortgage compared to those who got a loan earlier this year. Mortgage rates dropped in response to economic cooling and expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts. But now that the Fed has started lowering the federal funds rate and future cuts have already been priced in, mortgage rates might not drop much further this year unless the economic outlook changes. Now that inflation has decelerated and is nearing the Fed's target, central bankers have started lowering rates to avoid a downturn in the labor market.
