Unless the economic outlook changes, mortgage rates might not drop much further this year. Mortgage rates are starting the month a little higher, with 30-year rates hovering around 5.90%, according to Zillow data. In September, rates averaged 5.74%. Mortgage rates remain relatively low compared to where they've been for most of 2024, and they might not drop much further this year unless the economic outlook changes and the Federal Reserve has to cut its benchmark rate more aggressively than expected. In a speech in Nashville on Monday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the economy is "in solid shape" and that officials will be looking to the latest data when making decisions about rates at its upcoming meetings. Right now, traders are betting that the Fed will cut rates by 75 basis points before the end of the year. If the labor market starts to weaken, larger cuts could become more likely.
