Rates might not drop much this month unless the economic outlook changes. In September, 30-year mortgage rates averaged around 5.74%, according to Zillow data. This is down 31 basis points from the month before, and the fifth month in a row that rates have dropped. Though they dropped a lot last month, we might not see mortgage rates fall much in October unless the economic outlook changes. Right now, the labor market appears to be holding up, but an unexpected weakening could cause mortgage rates to tick down. With rates so low, now could be a good time to consider buying a house. We're currently in the best week to buy a home , according to Realtor.com, where there's still a decent amount of inventory available but less competition among buyers. This seasonal sweet spot could help buyers save an estimated $14,000 compared to when prices peaked this summer.
