New forecasts by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) show interest rates will stay higher for the rest of the decade than previously predicted, which could make borrowing more expensive for anyone with a mortgage. There are also effects for your tax return and your household finances. Here, Telegraph Money scratches below the surface to dig into what Wednesday's announcement means for you. In a blow to mortgage-holders, interest rates are poised to fall at a slower rate than previously thought. The OBR has forecast that the average interest rate on current mortgage stock is expected to rise from around 3.7pc in 2024 to a peak of 4.7pc in 2028, then stay around that level until 2030. This is an increase of 0.2 percentage points from the forecaster's expectations at the Budget in October. With inflation set to rise later this year and maintain an average of 3.2pc throughout 2025, expectations of future interest rate cuts may need to be adjusted. New forecasts suggest
