in Tuesday afternoon trading after Raymond James upgraded the regional bank to Market Perform from Underperform as lower interest rates support a brighter outlook. "The 5-year Treasury has declined meaningfully, which supports a relatively more positive credit outlook, and the likelihood of Fed rate cuts should support NIM [net interest margin] expansion in 2025," analyst Steve Moss wrote in a note to clients. "Lower interest rates, if sustained, should reduce problem credit formation, allow for the continued pay-off of substandard loans, and potentially spend greater time on franchise enhancing investments," he added. Still, New York Community Bancorp's ( NYCB ) turnaround will take an extended period of time and its stock is highly sensitive to interest rates. He sees NYCB's NIM hitting bottom in Q3 2024 as funding pressures appear to have abated during the quarter.
