For me, one of the unexpected twists in the generative AI (Gen AI) story is that, as we move past the hype cycle phase into a focus on tangible value creation, big companies are becoming cool again. For so long, we have worshipped the vision of disruptive start-ups as the key to making the world a better place, to the extent that innovation often seems synonymous with the "pre-profit" phase of the business cycle. And of course, many of the technologies that we depend on in our lives every day—smartphones, search engines, social media—were invented by risk-taking entrepreneurs with a big vision and a backbone for risk. But I think the "kid in the garage" story has been taken too far.
