“The challenge is not only to develop the technologies needed to reduce carbon emissions but to produce them with a low carbon footprint,” says Chris Burns, CEO of NOVONIX Limited , who started his journey in the energy storage industry in a CFI-funded lab at Dalhousie University. There, he developed time-efficient battery-testing technology that was eagerly embraced in an industry that prioritizes speed to market. “We started NOVONIX in 2013 to provide testing and services,” he says, “to help accelerate the pace of research and development for customers in the U.S., Asia and Europe.” Taking on a role at Tesla soon after, Dr. Burns recognized the “need for local supply of key battery materials for cell- and electric-vehicle manufacturing.” In 2017, NOVONIX shifted focus to develop and deploy material-processing technology focused on synthetic graphite for lithium-ion batteries.
