The $10.6B project is expected to produce potash at costs that are less than the top Canadian operations of fertilizer firms Nutrien and Mosaic, BHP's ( BHP ) Karina Gistelinck said, adding that Jansen's massive size and the company's heavy spending on automation are crucial in keeping costs down to be more competitive than other mines in Canada. Since Jansen's approval, flows of fertilizer from Russia and Belarus have rebounded and driven down potash prices, so the new mine is now expected to add millions of tons into a balanced market rather than one needing new supplies that BHP ( BHP ) had expected. "Even with depressed prices, we'll be profitable," Gistelinck told Bloomberg. BHP ( BHP ) expects Jansen will deliver 4.2M tons of potash when Phase 1 starts production in 2026, adding 5% to current global potash supply, and doubling by 2031, when the project reaches full capacity, Gistelinck said.
