Small, family-owned defense companies in Italy grew by 29.2 percent in 2023, outperforming state-run firms and foreign players, according to the Mediobanca report. Foreign-owned firms make up 25.1 percent of turnover in the Italian defense industry, with 36 of the top 100 firms in Italy being foreign-owned, according to the Mediobanca report. Only 49 percent of the total €40.7 billion turnover of Italy's top 100 firms is derived from defense contracts, approximately €20 billion, with the remaining 51 percent coming from civil contracts, according to the Mediobanca report.
