The Congressional Budget Office sees national debt rising from 99% of GDP this year to 122% in 2034, surpassing its previous high of 106% of GDP set in 1946. A majority of respondents (58.8%) to Seeking Alpha's Sentiment Survey for September see a greater risk of a fiscal crisis as the worst consequence of uncontrolled debt levels. Ratings agency Moody's this week warned that U.S. fiscal health will deteriorate regardless of who wins the November presidential election in the absence of meaningful steps to reduce the fiscal deficit, rein in new borrowing and slow the rise in interest expense. That can impact government bond yields used to price many other types of debt. More than half of the SA Sentiment Survey's respondents (54.1%) see steep spending cuts as the most realistic way to immediately address the budget deficit.
