It fell 1.4pc today, meaning a dollar buys 105.5 roubles. That is compared to more than 100 roubles last summer, at which point the central bank hiked interest rates in an emergency session to prop up the currency. However, Russia's finance minister brushed off concerns over the latest drop in the value of the rouble. Anton Siluanov told a financial conference today in Moscow: “I am not saying whether the exchange rate is good or bad. I am just saying that today the exchange rate is very, very favourable for exporters. “The key thing is that the exchange rate is more important for exports than the interest rate.” The rouble slid through the symbolically important threshold of 100 against the US dollar last week after Washington announced sanctions on Gazprombank, a major Russian financial institution that handles payments for Russia's energy exports.
