At times, it feels as if restaurants require an extensive labor force to put the burgers and fries that diners love on tables and fry a spicy chicken sandwich to the perfect crispness. But since the global pandemic, many restaurants and commercial kitchens have struggled to find and keep the staff needed to run operations and keep customers coming back. As restaurants face labor challenges, automation—when deployed thoughtfully—offers a number of options for addressing them. People often believe that automation exists to replace something of value—like humans. The opposite is true, however, in the restaurant industry. According to the National Restaurant Association , 45% of operators need more employees to meet customer demand. Automation can replace tasks humans cannot or do not have time to do, allowing short-staffed employees to focus on higher-value tasks.
