In addition to a social media outcry, another airline has offered deals to capitalize on the passenger angst. Now Southwest Airlines has faced a new problem. Fitch Ratings has issued a "negative ratings" outlook for Southwest, according to CNBC. In addition to the free bags change, the airline's decision to get rid of unassigned seating, contributed to the gloomy outlook. Why the negative ratings outlook? "Southwest may shift to a less conservative capital allocation and financial policy, while ongoing strategic changes have the potential to impact its competitive position relative to network carriers," Fitch Ratings wrote, according to CNBC. According to CNBC , Southwest has faced pressure to "improve margins" since "activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management" took "a stake in the carrier."
