Traders in the fed funds futures market pushed up the chances of a September rate cut to 62.8% from 46.8% a day earlier, according to the CME FedWatch tool . The move came after the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index report showed core CPI at 3.4% Y/Y, the lowest since April 2021 when the reading was 3%. Headline CPI at 3.3% Y/Y was less than the 3.4% expected. The core and headline rates were still well above the Fed's 2% inflation target. The data arrived ahead of the June policy decision due later Wednesday. Policymakers led by Jerome Powell are expected to leave the fed funds rate steady at 5.25%-5.5%. “Softer inflation is good news for the Federal Reserve,” Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, said in a note. “The Fed will still likely communicate this afternoon their intentions to keep rates higher for longer in their updated summary of economic projections.
