With the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) now less than a month away, I’ve started poring over sales figures and forecasts on the look out for potential trends likely to dominate the CES showfloor. And one simple thing that’s stood out more than anything else is screen size. All the sales indicators and forecasts released over 2019 make it clear that we’re increasingly drawn to squeeze ever-larger TVs into our living rooms. Renowned industry analyst GfK, for instance, has sales figures for Europe showing that while just 7000 TVs of 80 inches or more were sold in 2017, this figure rose dramatically to 27,000 in 2018, and was expected to be up around 40,000 by the end of this year. Market analyst IHS’s GLOBAL sales figures and forecasts, meanwhile, show the above 65-inch category to be the fastest growing segment in the TV market.
