Desde que regresó al poder en enero, el presidente estadounidense ha lanzado una guerra comercial con su vecino y plantea periódicamente la idea de que Canadá se convierta en el 51.º estado de Estados Unidos. El nuevo primer ministro canadiense, Mark Carney, quien asumió el cargo el viernes, quiere "determinar si el contrato de compra del F-35, en su forma actual, representa la mejor inversión para Canadá y si hay otras opciones que puedan satisfacer mejor las necesidades" del país, dijo un portavoz del ministerio en un correo electrónico. Ottawa firmó un contrato con el gigante de defensa estadounidense Lockheed Martin en 2023 para comprar 88 F-35, y ya se han realizado los pagos por los primeros 16 aviones de combate, cuya entrega se espera a principios del próximo año. "Debemos hacer nuestra tarea dado el entorno cambiante y garantizar que el contrato, en su forma actual, sea en el mejor interés de los canadienses y de las Fuerzas Armadas Canadienses", enfatizó el portavoz.
