Its accompanying SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust ( NYSEARCA: SPY climbed 1.11% for the week. It was a historic week for the benchmark index, as it crossed the 5,700 level for the first time ever. In what was undoubtedly the most important event of the week, or for that matter, in recent memory, the Federal Reserve on Wednesday delivered its first interest rate cut since the COVID-19 pandemic four years ago. And it was a bumper cut at that! The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) slashed its federal funds rate by 50 basis points to 4.75%-5.00%, ending a nearly two-week debate over the size of the anticipated cut heading into the announcement. Moreover, though the FOMC's statement and Fed chair Jerome Powell's remarks in his post-decision press conference did not shed much guidance on the size and pace of further rate cuts, the Fed's updated Summary of Economic Projections (SEP), or so-called dot plot, projected more policy easing.
