He was also a benevolent proprietor of The Spectator magazine, though the political career that he hoped might follow did not transpire. Jardine Matheson & Co traced its origins to Canton in 1832. Two lowland Scots, James Matheson and William Jardine, formed a partnership trading in tea, silk, rhubarb and – hugely profitably – opium. Their successors diversified into real estate and railways and built substantial businesses in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The Keswick connection derived from the marriage of William Jardine's grand-daughter Margaret Johnstone to William Keswick, who was taipan (head of the firm in Hong Kong) from 1875 to 1886. Henry Neville Lindley Keswick, William's great-grandson, was born in Shanghai on September 29 1938. He was the eldest of three sons of Sir William “Tony” Keswick, who combined his role as a resident director of Jardines with the chairmanship of the Municipal Council of Shanghai's International Settlement, and was later a director of the Bank of Eng
